AKC-CAR Profile

The AKC-CAR program was founded in 1995 to help reunite lost pets with their owners. AKC-CAR provides 24-hour recovery services for microchipped and tattooed pets. The enrollment database is located in Raleigh, NC, but maintains records from around the world. AKC-CAR is an affiliate of the American Kennel Club and is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization.

AKC-CAR and Schering-Plough Animal Health (SPAH) partnered in 1995 to further promote the benefits of permanent identification. While SPAH promotes and distributes HomeAgain® microchips and scanners throughout the United States, AKC-CAR provides 24-hour recovery services for enrolled HomeAgain-chipped animals.

In fact, all microchipped animals are eligible for enrollment, regardless of microchip brand. Tattooed animals are also eligible for enrollment with the 24-hour service. The AKC-CAR database stores over one million microchip numbers and thousands of tattoo numbers. Although dogs make up the majority of the database, many cats, horses, birds, and other companion and exotic animals are enrolled.

AKC-CAR has built strong relationships with animal agencies, field volunteers, professionals, and pet enthusiasts. AKC-CAR works closely with other national identification databases and is used as a valuable resource for the recovery of lost pets. The program continues to develop key relationships with individuals and organizations in the animal welfare and recovery fields.

We invite those new to AKC-CAR to read through our web site and join us, in our ongoing efforts in animal recovery, in one of the following ways:

If you are a pet owner, consider microchip or tattoo ID and enroll your pet with AKC-CAR.
If you are a veterinarian, consider offering microchipping at your clinic.
If you are a shelter, humane society or rescue group, consider microchipping your adopted animals and scanning your incoming animals for microchips.
If you are a breed club or animal hospital, consider sponsoring a microchip or tattoo clinic as a community service.
