  Mile High Weimaraner Rescue

It is normal for most families to want a younger Weim that will be a family member for 10+ years. The usual age for Weims to enter rescue is between 1 and 3 years old. While not as common as the young dogs, we do see a fairly consistent stream of seniors entering rescue. The stories for their entry into rescue vary, but their needs are all the same. The seniors we rescue need so little to live out their final years gracefully. Just a place at your feet or at the end of the couch and being part of a loving family is enough...

JC is a 10 year old gray male weim. He's lived most of his life with Lola. He is a NO with cats, but is great with kids and other dogs. He is house-trained and obedience trained. He is used to being left in the house while his owner is at work, and he is not destructive. He knows how to and needs to use the doggie door. J.C. is a very large weim at 110 pounds, and he could definitely benefit from a weight-loss plan and getting on a better diet. J.C. has ear problems, most likely resulting from a food allergy. His owner is unable to afford the food that he needs, and notes that his ear problems have resulted in surgery for an ear hematoma. J.C. does have polyps in his ears from a lifetime of ear infections. More than likely, the ear problems could be easily resolved with a more high quality food without wheat and corn, which are the top 2 allergens for dogs. The Rescue would like to find JC a foster or adoptive home, and get JC out of the shelter. Read more about JC on the Available Dogs page.

Welcome to Mile High Weimaraner Rescue

Mile High Weimaraner Rescue (MHWR) is an organization operated soley by volunteers dedicated to the welfare of the Weimaraner breed. MHWR is a rescue group who operates on donations and the support of the Weimaraner Foundation Fund - Rescue Committee, which is part of the Weimaraner Club of America. When a Weimaraner is placed in a new home an adoption fee is required in order to help with the expenses of rehoming Weimaraners. Expenses incurred by rescue include: spaying, neutering, vaccinations, veterinary care, microchips, and heartworm testing. Expenses incurred locally by rescue include: advertising, collars, leashes, tags, crates, dog beds, books, administrative expenses, etc.

MHWR is located in the Denver, Colorado metropolitan area. MHWR does not place Weimaraners outside of a four hour drive from Denver. If you want to adopt a MHWR Weimaraner, you must come to the location where the Weimaraner is kept or arrange for transportation.

We do not have a facility to house the Weimaraners that are available for adoption. Available Weimaraners are kept in their own home, in a foster home, in a boarding kennel, or in a shelter until they can find their new home.

What is Rescue?

Rescue is a common term in the pure-bred canine world for taking an unwanted dog and putting it in a family that wants the dog. The new term that is coming about is "re-homing." Since the number one reason for people surrendering or relinquishing their Weims in Colorado is not enough time, re-homing sounds more appropriate. Sometimes though, the word "rescue" still applies. There are occasions where a Weim is in a shelter and may be put down because of lack of space at the shelter or the shelter not being able to find the right home for the dog. MHWR is dedicated to helping Weims in the wrong homes or wrong situations to find different homes where they can be loved and exercised appropriately.
